Dear Educational Assistance Award Applicant:

Enclosed is an application for an Educational Assistance Award for the 2025-2026 academic year. FULLY COMPLETED applications should be submitted no later than Sunday, July 27, 2025, to H. Walter Early, Marcus Jackson, or Loretta Jackson, to be eligible to receive an award. I strongly encourage church disciples to complete and submit an application for an Educational Assistance Award if you are considering continuing your education to preserve your eligibility to receive an Educational Assistance Award even though you may not have definitively determined to attend a college/university or a post-secondary school. Incomplete or late applications, except as specified below, will not be considered for an award. The three exceptions to the requirement to submit a fully complete and timely application are as follows:

1. If you have not received a letter of acceptance/admission to the school you plan to attend when the completed application is due, this will not make you ineligible to receive an award;

2. If you are graduating from high school and are unable to include two letters of recommendation with your application, you must provide in writing the name and address of the persons from whom you have requested a letter of recommendation, their relationship to you (e.g., teacher, counselor, employer, etc.) and the date of the request; and

3. If you are a continuing student and are unable to include a copy of a transcript or official record of your most recent grades with your application, you must include written documentation that you have requested a transcript or official record of your grades to be eligible for an award.

This letter describes the eligibility criteria and application process for applying for a Garner/Yancey Educational Assistance Award.  The enclosed application form can also be used to apply for financial assistance under the following educational award programs: Robert C. Reed Foundation (music); R. Johnson Waller, Jr. Scholarship Fund; Ida Nix Memorial Scholarship Fund; Pauline Lucas Scholarship (nursing); and Edith Wilson Scholarship (high school graduate with the highest grade point average).

Applicants for a Garner/Yancey Assistance Award who are graduating from high school will be scheduled for an interview with the Garner/Yancey Educational Committee. The applicant should bring to the interview a portfolio consisting of any certificates, awards or other documents which demonstrate your accomplishments and the activities in which you participate. Garner/Yancey applicants who are continuing students may be scheduled for an interview at the discretion of the Garner/Yancey Educational Committee.  

To be eligible to receive a Garner/Yancey Educational Assistance Award the applicant must be:

          - a member/disciple of Mount Zion Baptist Church; and

          - pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree, Associate Degree or post-secondary school

             diploma or certificate.  

An applicant is only eligible to receive a Garner/Yancey Assistance Award for a total of five years. In addition, an applicant for a Garner/Yancey Assistance Award will not be eligible to receive an award if you receive an award from another educational assistance award program sponsored or administered by the Mount Zion Baptist Church with the exception of the Edith Wilson Scholarship which is awarded to the high school graduate with the highest-grade point average. Both full and part-time students are eligible to receive the same amount of financial assistance.
